AUSTRIA: ANONYMOUS ACCOUNTS TO BE ABOLISHED

Article Abstract:

Austria is planning to introduce a law on the abolition of anonymous savings accounts. Payments to such accounts without presenting a passport will be banned from 01 Nov 2000, anonymous withdrawals from 30 Jun 2000. Within this transition period, a gift tax amnesty is to enable the transfer of anonymous savings accounts without fiscal charges. On the other hand, confidentiality in banking will become stricter. The public prosecution will no longer have the right to collect information on a suspect's account without a warrant. Moreover, banks will no longer be obliged to report deserted accounts. The draft amendment to the banking law is to be submitted to the parliament on 20 May 2000.
