AUSTRIA: BAWAG TAKING OVER VERKEHRSKREDITBANK

Article Abstract:

The supervisory board of OBB is expected to take a decision on 16 September 1999 on the sale of the national railway company's 51% stake in Osterreichische Verkehrskreditbank to Bawag . Bawag will then hold 66% of the stock of the bank that has 18,000 accounts with assets of 1.3bn and 9 automatic savings points. With the acquisition, Bawag is boosting private banking but also hoping to gain business from companies associated with OBB. Other shareholders of Verkehrskreditbank are Bank Austria, Creditanstalt, Erste Bank, Raiffeisen Zentralbank (RZB) and Deutsche Verkehrs-Bank AG. In the first half of 1999 Osterreichische Verkehrskreditbank made a profit on ordinary activities of Sch 21.1mn (Sch 18.4mn a year earlier) on a balance sheet total of Sch 4.4bn.

ROMANIA: RZB TAKES OVER BANCA AGRICOLA

Article Abstract:

Raiffeisen Zentralbank (RZB) of Austria has signed an agreement to buy 98% of Romania's third-largest bank Banca Agricola. Banca Agricola employs about 3,600 staff at 226 branches. The full-range bank has a balance sheet total of about EUR 362mn. RZB is to seek synergies between Banca Agricola and its Romanian subsidiary Raiffeisenbank. The latter specialises in commercial clients and investment banking, but launched consumer banking in year 2000. The bank with about 100 staff has a balance sheet total of about EUR 67mn.

Raiffeisen Zentralbank (RZB) of Austria is said to be interested in taking a stake in Romanian Banca Agricola that is to be privatised. Banca Agricola, which employs about 3,600 staff, has a balance sheet total of about Sch 5bn.
