AUSTRIA: EU INVESTIGATES TRADE BARRIERS

Article Abstract:

The European Commission is investigating Austrian regulations that are seen to hinder the imports of pharmaceutical and food products to Austria. Austria forbids statements by food producers concerning the health effects of their products. The Commission criticises the fact that the rule does not differentiate between statements that are misleading and those that are not. The rule criticised by the Commission in the field of pharmaceuticals states that pharmaceutical products may be used with the approval of a doctor or a veterinary surgeon even if they do not have an approval . However, this applies only to pharmaceutical products manufactured in Austria.

EUROPE: SUGAR INDUSTRY CONCERNED ABOUT EU PLANS

Article Abstract:

Agrana , which runs Austria's three sugar mills in Hohenau, Leopoldsdorf and Tulln, will not comment on plans to open the European Union markets to the 48 least developed countries of the world. The company fears, however, that the planned liberalisation may mean the end of a number of sugar mills in Europe. In Austria, especially the Hohenau mill is seen to be under threat.
