AUSTRIA: METRO, WAZ PLANNING UNDERGROUND PAPERS

Article Abstract:

Metro International of Sweden and WAZ group of Germany are involved in separate projects to introduce newspapers in Vienna's underground network. While the Swedish company indicates that its proposals have been rejected both by the underground operator Wiener Linien and the city authorities, WAZ and its Austrian partner Hans Dichand are said to be intensively preparing the launch of such a paper for March 2001. Wiener Linien reject any discrimination of either candidate. Hans Dichand owns half of the big tabloid daily Kronen Zeitung.

CROATIA: AUSTRIANS FAIL IN NEWSPAPER BID

Article Abstract:

Director general Horst Pirker says that the Austrian Graz-based publishing company Styria Medien AG is still interested in the south-east European market, although it failed in its bid to take over Croatia's leading daily, Vecernji List. The sale of a majority stake in the paper was stopped by the Croatian government in May 2000 in what is believed to be a politically motivated move.
