AUSTRIA: MORE THAN 50% USE MOBILE PHONES

Article Abstract:

About 4.3mn Austrians own mobile phones at the end of 1999. This corresponds to a penetration of 52-54%, up from 28.5% at the beginning of the year. In 2000, the penetration is expected to increase to 69%. About 410,000 mobile phones were sold in the Christmas season. Mobilkom increased the number of subscribers to 2.3mn, Max.mobil to 1.5mn. Also One exceeds expectations with 500,000 clients. WAP phones will be introduced in the first quarter of 2000. Georg Polzl from Max.mobil expects more than one third of mobile phone users to gradually change their old terminals for WAP phones. At the very first stage, however, the new terminals will mainly attract only "technology freaks".
