AUSTRIA: PALMERS INTO COSMETICS, FURNISHINGS

Article Abstract:

The Austrian Wiener Neustadt-based underwear retailer Palmers is launching a cosmetics and toiletries line through some of its own stores and those of the perfumery chain Douglas. Palmers Woman includes perfumes, deodorants, shampoos, soap etc. Is expected to generate a turnover of Sch 5mn in the first year. It will be followed by cosmetics and toiletries for men and youngsters. Palmers is looking for international partners for introducing the cosmetics and toiletries concept outside Austria. In the Steffl department store in Vienna, Palmers is also testing the sale of interior furnishing accessories. Also Palmers Home shops-in-shop, which have an area of 45-65 sq.m, are to be introduced abroad. According to chief executive Rudolf Humer, Palmers' foreign expansion plans involve Asia. The company is eyeing Hong Kong. It is already testing two shops in Seoul.

AUSTRIA: NIEDERMEYER REACTS TO MARKET SATURATION

Niedermeyer, the Austrian electronics retail chain owned by the mobile phone operator Max.mobil, is spending Sch 500mn on revamping its image. With the mobile phone market approaching saturation, Niedermeyer is to boost sales of computers, digital photography equipment and consumer electronics. In year 2000 more than half of the turnover of Sch 3.96bn was generated with telephones and mobile phone subscriptions. By investing in new branches and advertising, Niedermeyer aims to raise turnover by 40% by 2003.

AUSTRIA: SWAROVSKI TO EXPAND AS RETAILER

Article Abstract:

The world's leading crystal cutting company Swarovski is to open 300-500 new stores of its own worldwide by 2004/2005. Currently the company has 150 stores which are run by partners. The new outlets with 65-70 sq.m will be in city centres and shopping malls. After having already set up flagship stores in Berlin, London and Paris, the company is to open the next ones in Madrid and Milan.
