AUSTRIA: POWER IMPORT FROM HUNGARY BANNED

Article Abstract:

According to a decision by Austria's finance minister Johann Farnleitner, WienStrom is not allowed to import electricity from Hungary, as the latter has not opened its electricity market to foreign companies. WienStrom wanted to import electricity from a gas turbine power station in Hungary, but Verbundgesellschaft refused to grant access to its grid for such imports. Also EVN has filed an application to import electricity from Hungary. The electricity industry criticises the fact that the economics minister is both the regulator of the electricity sector and the state's representative in the big power company Verbund.
