AUSTRIA: STUDY OF PRIVATISATION POTENTIAL

Article Abstract:

Morgan Stanley has conducted a study of the privatisation potential of Austrian Airlines, Bohler Uddeholm, Osterreichische Post, VA Stahl and VA Tech. The law on OIAG, the state holding company, does not provide for privatisation of these companies, and OIAG says that it did not order the survey. It is suggested that the study was ordered by OIAG's supervisory board chairman Alfred Heinzel, who is an advocate of privatisation. Morgan Stanley analysts see favourable conditions for the privatisation of Bohler Uddeholm and Osterreichische Post, whereas a privatisation of VA Tech is seen as problematic. Potential buyers for the Post include Deutsche Post, La Poste of France, British Post Office, UPS and FedEx. The investment bank sees a sale to a strategic partner as the only viable privatisation alternative for the Post. The attractiveness of the Post is, however, undermined by the strong political and trade union influence and the pension and job guarantees of the Post. Lufthansa and airline alliances are believed to be interested in Austrian Airlines and Rautaruukki, Corus and Usinor in VA Stahl, if the companies were privatised.
