AUSTRIA: TRENDS IN DRINKS MARKET

Article Abstract:

In 1998 Austrians drank 75 litres of mineral water on average, up 8 litres from ten years earlier. The market amounted to 602mn litres, of which Romerquelle accounted for 160mn litres worth Sch 445mn and Voslauer 120mn litres (100mn l in 1997). In 1999 Romerquelle expects a 5% increase in sales, while Voslauer anticipates double-digit growth in turnover. Hot weather in Austria has boosted the sales of mineral water, fruit juice and mixed mineral water/fruit juice drinks, while beer is less popular. Beer sales are the highest at temperatures of 23-27 degrees Celsius. According to Spar, iced tea is not selling as well as in the past, while the fruit juice producer Rauch reports a slight increase in iced tea sales. Spar reports that since the introduction of the lower drunken driving limit, sales of alcoholic drinks in the retail trade have increased, as alcohol consumption is moving from bars and restaurants to homes. This applies especially to wine.
