It is estimated that 800,000 people in Austria suffer from diabetes, and the number is forecast to double by year 2015. About half of the patients are now aware of the disease. Worldwide, the number of diabetes patients is forecast to double to 300mn by 2025.

Epidemiologists at the University of Oxford estimate the number of people infected with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease at between 100 and 136,000. The wide range is explained with the long incubation time, which is 20-60 years.
