Aetna's Philippine license broadens crowded market

Article Abstract:

The Philippine government has awarded Aetna Life Insurance a license to operate in the country in line with its new economic liberalization policy. This move gives this unit of Aetna International Inc. the privilege of being the first foreign insurance firm to be licensed since the 1960s. However, Aetna will be competing with 25 other life insurance firms which are all vying for an increase in a share of a market that is still relatively small.

Some analysts are warning that the financial difficulties of Japan's life insurance companies could have a negative impact not only on the stock market but on the national economy as well. They stress that many of these insurers are not earning enough money to cover all their obligations to their policyholders. The industry's problems are rooted in bad business decisions dating back from the boom years of the 1980s.
