Alain Chevalier's elegant empire of luxury products

Article Abstract:

Alain Chevalier, president of Moet Hennessy SA, the French producer of Moet et Chandon champagne, has led the diversification of the company from a small wine-growing concern to one of the richest international companies in France. Among the areas the company has entered in recent years are cosmetics and perfumes, as well as bio-technology to improve cosmetics ingredients and to develop strains of grape vines resistant to disease. Among Chevalier's plans for the company in the near- and long-term are expansion of production in the U.S. and the Pacific Basin, and it hopes to capitalize on its 'American' emphasis on performance to succeed in its diversification efforts and its move into international markets.

Arkansas Best and financial products

Article Abstract:

Many companies seek to minimize their risk by hedging interest rate and foreign currency matters, and before Arkansas Best v Commissioner these hedges were deemed to result in ordinary as opposed to capital gain or loss. In Arkansas Best, the Supreme Court held that business purpose does not determine if an asset is capital. In order for a loss to qualify as ordinary, one of four exceptions to Section 1221 must apply. This difference of opinion over how to characterize losses would best be solved by additional legislation.
