Wahid Takes Hard Line With Foreign-Owned Indorayon

Indonesia's President Abdurrahman Wahid ordered the closure of PT Inti Indorayon Utama's rayon-producing operations, due to evidence of environmental damage on Sumatra island. Foreign interests own 86% of the company, and the move is seen as sending a strong message to big business regarding compliance with environmental laws.

Armed-forces leader urges nation to back new president

Article Abstract:

Indonesia's armed forces commander, Gen Wiranto, is exhorting Indonesians to support their new president, President BJ Habibie. Meantime, the Indonesian currency continued to decline, further impeding the economy and pounding key business sectors. According to bankers, if the rupiah fails to shore up, majority of the country's companies would be unable to settle their obligations even with an exchange-rate subsidy.
