China International Capital Corp., a joint venture set up by Morgan Stanley Dean Witter and Co. and China Construction Bank, is experiencing management troubles. Levin Zhu Yunlai, the son of Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji, has become the company's most powerful figure despite his official ranking as the most junior member of the management committee. Although the company's profits are pleasing to Morgan Stanley Dean Witter and Co., the management struggles and other strained relations leave Morgan Stanley Dean Witter and Co. hoping to distance itself from the company in the future.

Defaults by joint venture in Thailand roil Japanese banks; Siam Yamaha's woes highlight a changing relationship between lenders and offshore borrowers

Article Abstract:

The changing relationship between Japanese lenders and offshore borrowers is reflected in the series of defaults by Siam Yamaha Co, a joint venture between Yamaha Motor Corp of Japan and KPN Group of Thailand. The defaults, amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars, have inflicted losses on Japanese banks. The situation demonstrates the vulnerability of lending banks because of their inability to roll over loans to customers. At the same time, their sudden withdrawal from private lending to international markets has also gravely affected Asian economies.
