Star system is a poor hotel guide for Asia, where standards differ

Article Abstract:

The lack of uniform standards among hotels in Asia is bound to confuse and disappoint business travelers. This is because Asian hotels' supposed star ratings do not live up to expectations. Thus, some hotels that advertise themselves as five-star hotels may be in reality only three-star ones. In Hong Kong, for instance, the rating of hotels is done by the Hong Kong Tourist Assn but its findings are not published. Government-set ratings based on facilities are used as the standard for other hotels in Asia such as in India, China, Singapore, Malaysia and South Korea.
