Austria: Reform of occupational safety and health law

Article Abstract:

On 23 November 2001 the Austrian parliament decided on a reform of the occupational safety and health law, to reduce the number of accidents at work from 110,000 in 2000 to at least 100,000 accidents. For small-sized businesses nothing will change, whereas for businesses with more than 50 employees the reform will have a beneficial impact.. From January 2002 on, the working time of industrial medical doctors and safety specialists will be reduced. For office jobs a reduction from 1.6 hours to 1.2 hours per employee per year is planned. Working time will be divided with 40% for industrial medical doctors, 35% for safety specialists and 25% for other specialists, like industrial psychologists. Furthermore, a general ban on smoking can be enacted, where up to now such a ban could only be enforced if there was not sufficient ventilation provided.

Austria: Smokers encouraged to give up

Article Abstract:

According to experts, 550,000 people within the European Union die each year from the effects of smoking. A study, by the university of Vienna, indicates that of the 2.3mn smokers Austria wide, three quarters would like to quit, thus the Pharmacia Austria, Austrian chemists and the nicotine institute in Vienna are organising a 'smoker's therapy day'. This is to take place on 17 November 2001 and smokers will receive six packets each of nicotine substitutes. One of the dangers of smoking is the carbon monoxide which forms an attachment to haemoglobin 150 times stronger than that of oxygen, which can lead to a lack of oxygen. The risk of lung cancer is 20 times higher, even if a smoker only smokes one packet of cigarettes, say experts.
