Article Abstract:

Banks in eastern Europe are being privatized, and there will be few domestically owned banks in the region. Poland is to sell as stake of 55% in the second largest Polish bank, Pekao, with a 20% stake in the retail market. Romania may float some of Banca Agricola as well as majority holdings in the Romanian Bank for Development and Banco Post. Komercni Banka is to be sold in the Czech Republic. Hungary's Postabank may also be sold, following a government rescue in 1998.
