Preserving London Zoo's pioneering architecture

Article Abstract:

London Zoo has a history of encouraging innovative architecture. Its unique buildings have been surveyed and are published by the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England in 'London Zoo: An Architectural Survey'. Since the Zoo's opening in the 1830s, architects have produced experimental designs although the early buildings were unsuitable for the animals. The high point of the Zoo's building programme was in the 1920s and 30s when collaboration between curators and architects produced internationally acclaimed structures.

The time has come to develop a code for urban design

Article Abstract:

Richard MacCormac is a long standing campaigner for the concept of urban design. The Royal Inststute of British Architects president is to chair a colloquium on the subject with the aim of working out a basic code for urban development. MacCormac uses principles for assessing urban design which are based on his own experience but hopes for a pluralist approach to the issues rather than the prescriptive nature of developments like Poundbury, Dorset.
