Bear market, budget press Poland

Article Abstract:

The Polish government had planned an initial public offering in 2001 for the state-owned insurance company, Powszechny Zaklad Ubezpieczen, as well as a secondary offer of up to 30% of the telecommunications company, Telekomunikacja Polska S.A. A bear market and budget constraints, however, have made the 2001 timetable appear unrealistic, according to Poland's treasury minister, Aldona Kamela-Sowinska.

Call for help; Poland's phone company seeks a partner with all the right stuff

Article Abstract:

Telekomunikacja Polska S.A. is looking for a foreign investment partner to help it prepare for deregulation. The Polish government will sell at least 25% of the telephone company by the end of 1999 to a strategic investor, hoping to collect as much as $4 billion from the sale. TPSA currently holds 95% of Poland's fixed-line market, and reported 1998 net profits of US$267.7 million. Analysts say the foreign investor will need to help TPSA trim its payroll by about 30%, cut operating costs, and move the focus to business and Internet customers.
