Cellular offices where the staff have a view

Article Abstract:

Two office designs for legal firms illustrate the difficulties of using natural light in deep plan buildings. Both companies require a high proportion of cellular offices and have open-plan workstations for secretarial staff. For Taylor Johnson Garrett, architect, ORMS has used glazed partitions and grouped offices around the workstations. A more traditional approach has been used by The Thomas Saunders Partnership for Frere Cholmeley but glazing and careful grouping of cellular offices allows all staff access to natural light.

A practical silk purse from an uninspiring sow's ear

Article Abstract:

SelecTV now occupies a headquarters building in Soho, London, England, which was created by Child Collins Architects from a 1960s office building most recently used as workshops. The design focuses on maximising the building's assets, including good daylighting and parquet floors. A key feature is the conversion of a loading bay into a large reception area. The building has a factory feel, enhanced by the use of materials such as galvanised-steel and slate.
