Charity moves off-campus

Article Abstract:

Universities in the US are seeking to improve relations with the communities around them, and Duke University, North Carolina, has been a pioneer in this field. The university has helped fund a children's clinic, and a loan fund for social housing. Marquette University, Wisconsin, has seen a drop in crime levels near the university, and an increase in applications after helping to fund an urban renewal program. Harvard is also funding affordable housing progream, though there is some suspicion of the university's plans to expand.

Mexican police have ended an occupation of the National Autoinomous University, Mexico city, ending a strike that had lasted 292 days. The strike started as a protest over tuition fees, and there had been calls for it to end before the police intervened, with 90% of staff and students favoring an end to the strike in Jan 2000. The university has lost students as well as equipment, and there has been damage to buildings. Serious reform of the system is not likely until after presidential elections in Dec 2000.
