China's moves in Spratlys spark international ire

Article Abstract:

Many observers believe that China's incursions into a Philippine-claimed part of the Spratly Islands has opened the long-standing dispute to greater international scrutiny. The discovery of a Chinese-built structure on Mischief Shoal, a reef located well within Philippine territorial waters, has alarmed not only the Philippine government but the US and other Southeast Asian nations as well. Analysts state that the Chinese will now have to deal with the Assn. of South East Asian Nations and the US government, all of whom have expressed concern over its recent actions.
