Clinton's clarion call

Article Abstract:

President Clinton's first trip to Asia was highlighted by a renewed pledge of strategic and economic cooperation with the region. Clinton was able to forge a trade agreement with the Japanese that was satisfactory to both sides. The president focused on strategic and military issues while in South Korea, assuaging any fears of a reduced American presence in the area. Clinton's overall message was that the US considers Asia its most important economic partner, and that it plans to play a vital role in the future development of the region.

America's easi options

Article Abstract:

The East Asia Strategy Initiative (EASI) that the US Defense Department recently submitted to Congress states that the US will play an important role as a regional power in the East Asian region. A key US objective is to prevent the rise of new regional powers that will pose a threat to US leadership in the region. The new regional powers the initiative may be referring to are Japan and China. Despite pressures from the US public, only a small percentage of the US forces in the region will be cut.

Article Abstract:

Pres George Bush has promised to review the 10-year old prohibition on the sale of F16 warplanes to Taiwan. This promise has been made in a pre-election campaign in Texas where General Dynamics, the builder of the planes, is based. Analysts see the move as significant regardless of its political color. Its effect on US relations with Taiwan and the latter's arch-enemy, China, bears watching.
