Comanche MEP on schedule

Article Abstract:

Lockheed Martin's Comanche Mission Equipment Package (MEP) is on schedule, according to programme director Art Linden. Linden said that the targeting system with its second-generation thermal imager is well on track. Aided target detection and classification algorithms, which are being run on commercial Pentium processors, are being trained on a variety of targets. Linden said that flight trials using second-generation forward-looking infrared sensors in conjunction with an early version of the Longbow radar against the same target have been very positive.

SAR alternatives

Article Abstract:

US military search and rescue helicopter units, such as the US Army National Guards, are testing the use of heli-baskets as potential replacements for external hoists. The heli-baskets, an innovation derived from the civilan loaflifting industry, are capable of lifting ten times the capacity of the hoist. Helicopters fitted with the heli-baskets are also observed to be better suited for multiple rescue and relief efforts.
