Company profiles: Amministrazione Autonoma dei Monopoli di Stato

Article Abstract:

Italy's Amministrazione Autonoma dei Monopoli di Stato (AMMS), or the State Monopoly, is the second leading cigarette manufacturer in Italy, with a 39.3% market share in value terms in 1997. The organization lags behind market leader Philip Morris despite being the regulating body for the distribution and retail of all tobacco products sold in Italy. AMMS' best-selling brand is MS Filtro, which accounted for 18.2% of the cigarette market in 1997. Under a law passed by the government in 1996, AMMS will be privatized. AMMS' conversion into a public company, however, is not expected before the end of the century.
