Conservatism rules

Article Abstract:

Universal banking has been slow to develop in Taiwan. Taiwan's older banks are restrained by conservatism from entering areas outside commercial banking, while young banks have less financial strength which also hampers them. Government-owned banks have seen a drop in their market share since liberalization of the market, yet still have advantages such as experience. Japanese and US banking models have influenced the development of the Taiwanese banking system which helps explain why investment banking has tended to be separate from commercial banking.

The politics of business

Article Abstract:

The Thai banking industry faces increased competition and slower economic growth, with gross domestic product growing by an estimated 7% in 1996. The Bangkok Bank of Commerce collapsed, with the government taking over in May 1996. The bank's president has been charged with fraud and embezzlement related to dubious loans, and this has eroded confidence in Thailand's financial system. Problem loans are forecast to grow, with slower growth in exports and lower consumption levels in Thailand.

The market for investment banking has expanded and initial public offerings have been boosted by the rise in emerging market funds, accounting for some 70% of investment in the Philippine stock exchange. The real estate industry is booming, and this has attracted universal banks which have set up real estate subsidiaries.
