Demonstrating economy

Article Abstract:

The management of BAA Lynton has been using a team of construction experts to achieve their aim of cutting costs and construction time to under one year per project. They have been able to use expertise gathered on one project to improve the next. BAA have undertaken 6 projects, the last being Endeavour House. The buildings are the same size and have concrete frames. A 3D model of each building has been placed on a website to ensure everyone works on the same design. Time spent on site has been cut from 46 weeks for the first World Business Centre building to 30 weeks for Endeavour House.

Forum follows friction

Article Abstract:

Architectural delegates at the 1996 UIA congress in Barcelona, Spain, spoke of their fears for the planet's future if the human race continues to destroy the environment. They discussed the vast socio-economic divide between rich city centres and poor out-of-town areas. The conference, entitled Present and Futures; Architecture in Cities, provided a constructive platform to progress architectural solutions. The conference was criticised for its dis-organised approach.

A flowering career

Article Abstract:

Working closely with architects is a vital element of the philosophy of structural engineer Jane Wernick, who is an associate director at Ove Arup and Partners. She has been involved with a number of controversial schemes, including working with Zaha Hadid on the Cardiff Opera House. She has been particularly influenced by modern architecture in the US, and believes that she has also benefited greatly from working with Peter Rice.
