Diamonds aren't forever

Article Abstract:

A study of India's industries by Michael Porter and his Harvard colleagues concluded that few of even the most successful ones are preparing for the future realistically. Garment-makers and diamond-cutters have focused on the low end of their markets and based their production on low-wage work, a method that leaves them vulnerable to competition. The software industry may be the best hope for a model of international success. The industries that have done well thus far rely little on India's inefficient internal services.

Oh, well: China's Tarim Basin is proving a big disappointment

Article Abstract:

Results from petroleum exploration projects in the Tarim Basin, China, have been disappointing. Foreign petroleum companies have had to pay high rates to gain access to blocks and data, have faced bureaucratic delays, and are concerned over the obstacles that could prevent a pipeline being built to take petroleum from the basin. Exxon's well in Jul 1996 was dry, though blocks offered to foreign companies are seen as less likely to have potential than those retained by the Chinese.

Triumph of the will: a pair of unlikely heroes battled Red Guards, philistines and bureaucrats to build a great museum in China's second city

Article Abstract:

The city of Shanghai, China, is aiming to become the nation's cultural centre, with the opening of the new Shanghai Museum. The Museum would not have become a reality but for the dedication of the Museum's director Ma Chengyuan and deputy Wang Qingzheng. The two men have worked tirelessly and singlemindedly to achieve their dream, the fruition of which is more remarkable when it is considered that it took place in a society that is actively indifferent to its past.
