DoCoMo, flush with new cash, pursues future of mobile phone

Article Abstract:

NTT Mobile Communications Networks (DoCoMo) is now poised to pursue its research aimed at bringing new advances in mobile phones. The company had raised 2.13 trillion yen from investors during its initial public offering in October 1998. According to the company, a huge chunk of the amount generated will be used to fund its move to commercialize the mobile phone technology, called wideband code division multiple access (W-CDMA), that its researchers are currently trying to perfect. NTT Mobile said once the technology is perfected, a new group of wireless services could become available in the market.

It's just a little more dangerous than walking while chewing gum

Article Abstract:

Automobile drivers using cellular telephones are nothing but nuisances in Asian countries. Despite numerous studies proving that cell phone use while driving may cause traffic accidents, statistics from the Singapore police shows that traffic accidents involving cell phone use account for only six of the 14,397 accidents in 1996. Singapore Transport Department official Raymond Ho maintains that the 'cellular driving menace' may not be a serious threat after all.
