Enduring attraction

Article Abstract:

Many foreign concerns continue to be very interested in investing in southeast Asia, despite the economic turmoil in the region at present. This could be a key factor in helping southeast Asia overcome its recession. Foreign investment will probably not revive to the extent it did after the region's last recession in 1985, but some countries are set to see significant foreign investment. These include Malaysia, which benefits from being close to Singapore, and the Philippines.

Article Abstract:

The Malaysian government has ruled that a compulsory Islamic civilization course should be taught in universities. There is concern that this is not sending the appropriate message to foreign investors and is in contrast to Malaysia's desire to modernise. Islam is Malaysia's official religion, but almost 30% of the population is Chinese and follows other religions like Buddhism. Islam is associated with the Malays who account for a little over 60% of Malaysia's inhabitants.
