En garde?

Article Abstract:

Meerkats have been portrayed as altruistic, yet this may be a misconception. Meerkats acting as sentinels are unable to eat and are more likely to be attacked, so this is an example of altruism, according to one theory, yet sentinels may be safer when acting as guards, since they may be more alert and nearer bolt holes. Animals that have eaten are more likely to be on guard duty. Meerkats still help each other through baby-sitting and other activities, but they may be less altruistic than first appeared.

Genomic pronouncements

Article Abstract:

The Human Genome Project is near to completing the genetic sequence of chromosome-22, the second smallest human chromosome that men and women share. This is progress, since the chromosome is thought to be linked to a number of discorders, such as schizophrenia. The Single Nucleotide Polymorphism Consortium is also working in a similar area, and both bodies release data as they progress. Meanwhile, Celera is carrying out a private project and seeking patents on some genes discovered by the company.

Grievous faults

Article Abstract:

The 1995 earthquake in Kobe, Japan, and the 1994 earthquake in Northridge, CA, have many seismic similarities. Predictions of earthquakes is difficult, yet some scientists hope to achieve this. The damage caused by the quakes shows that building codes can affect the death toll.
