Environment control for art

Article Abstract:

The Sackler Galleries at the Royal Aceamdy have had environmental control installed as designed by Sir Norman Foster and Partners. Environmental control is based on moisture control to preserve the pictures. Protecting pictures is achieved by positive pressure in the galleries, allowing air to flow out into the lobby, which is less controlled. Air diffusers high up in the galleries allow air to be sent both upwards and downwards, entrapping the surrounding air. Air is exhausted when it is drawn to the skirting level, and is then drawn into the lobby. The height of the galleries also allows moist air to collect high up near the ceiling.

Article Abstract:

Three stadia are under construction for the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. All three use glulam timber roof structures developed by local company, Moelven. The most original design is the mulit-purpose Olympic Hall. Shaped like an upturned ship, the 260 by 96 meter structure was designed by Biong and Biong. The ice hockey arena, Hakons Hall was designed by Ostgaard Arkitekter and has to withstand snow loadings of 900 Kg per sq meter. The Ice Hall, designed by HRBT, necessitated the development of new jointing methods to cope with the low pitched truss.

Diffuse light in focus

Article Abstract:

Technological developments in profiling the surface of glass or plastic may create commercial possibilities connected with the control of diffuse light. The UK National Physical Laboratory has been working on the development of controlled optical diffusers, and Scientific Generics is exploring the commercial possibilities of the laboratory's developments. Use of the diffractive optics technology to direct light from windows, light fittings or commercial signs could have advantages including energy savings and glare reduction.
