Europe switches on to towed radar decoys

Article Abstract:

Daimler-Benz Aerospace (Dasa) says it wants to obtain a production order in 1999 for the towed radar decoy that it has been developing with company money since the late 1980s. The possible applications in the Luftwaffe include Eurofighter, Tornado and bigger planes such as airlifters and maritime-patrol aircraft. Dasa is also asking for international partners for collaborative work in the field. The decoy, which uses different masking and repeater techniques, works well against pulse, pulse-Doppler, and continuous-wave radars. It runs in both high and low bands, having a transmitter power that the company describes as more than 100W.

Sharper set of eyes on the sky

Article Abstract:

Ground-based air-defense forces are increasingly adopting integrated, high-performance optronic systems for surveillance and fire control. The optronic system have passive sensors which are important during cover operations as well as when engaging low-level threats that apprear from behind ground covers. Among the leading systems are Hollande Signaalapparaten's Mirador EO surveillance and fire-control system, SAGEM's SAS 90 M optronic fire-ocontrol system and Bofors Weapon Systms' TRIDON self-propelled anti-aircraft gun system.
