Europe: united at what cost?

Article Abstract:

The economic difficulties that have been experienced by Germany following the union between the East and West will ultimately hinder European unity. The European Union was conceived to help cement peace in Europe and encourage economic growth for its member states. But recent recessions, high numbers of people without work and diverse economic polices has made these ideals redundant. Countries within the European Union need to foster competition and co-operation without forgoing their own identity as separate nation states.

The bubble bursts: Japan's economy has gone into a tailspin. The virtues that once made it strong may now be its undoing

Article Abstract:

As Japan approaches the new century, the traditional ways of doing things are becoming less effective. The Japanese economy grew too large in the 1980s and the excess culminated in an asset inflation bubble, which eventually burst, plunging the economy into severe deflation. Japanese people are becoming more aware of the need for change, and the government is speaking of reforms. However growth is need to enable the reforms to proceed without too much hardship, and immediate growth prospects are not good.

Inflation: courting ill winds?

Article Abstract:

Since the UK left the Exchange Rate Mechanism in 1992, the economy has been the envy of European governments struggling to reduce budget deficits in time to join the monetary union. Other aspects of the UK economy, including price mechanisms and flexibility of markets, are part of the success. The UK is under inflationary pressure with an appreciating currency, and it is questioned whether success can be maintained.
