Expanding horizons

Article Abstract:

Landscape Architects Gross. Max. have been awarded the project to design a new square in front of the Town Hall, Hackney, London, England. The design had to incorporate two listed flower beds and the town hall which was built in the 1930s. Gross. Max. was set up in 1995 by co-partners Eelco Hooftman and Bridget Baines who teach at Edinburgh College of Art, Scotland. Hooftman points out landscape architecture is beginning to become more interesting and he see many opportunities for the profession. They have also worked on projects in the Shetland Islands and in Glasgow, Scotland.

Elizabeth Banks Associates, landscape architects, have been working on historical projects but they are also involved in creating modern environments, such as the space alongside a new library by the River Thames, London, England. The company are keen to ensure their designs are not over complicated and do not include unnecessary features. The company was set up in 1987. It has worked on landscape designs for several large historial houses, such as Arundel Castle. Practice Principal Elizabeth Banks points out designs for historical properties have to be very well researched.

Lessons in Latvia: The British Embassy in Riga is installed once more in the mansion it occupied before the Second World War

Article Abstract:

The British Embassy in Riga, Latvia has been refurbished by Jestico + Whiles. The classical style villa had to be made more weatherproof and it was a priority to record what was remaining together with a detailed historical analysis. A cost analysis alterations, internal finishes, services and external works, together with working details of the casement windows is provided.
