FRANCE: HAVAS INTERACTIVE LEADS CD-ROM MARKET

Havas Interactive has spent FFr 12mn into the r&d of Katego, its range of four educational and game CD-ROMs which target the 8-12 year age range. The French multimedia publisher wants to sell 90,000 units of Katego in 2000. The new product will be launched in March that year, the same as the second volume of Jardin d'eveil whose sales target is 80,000 units a year. In the educational sector, Adi is introducing its fifth version (4mn units sold world-wide) while Coup de pouce (five products available in 1999) will offer an additional three products the year after. Adibou, which reported a 15% rise in sales in 1999, wants to double its penetration rate among the 4-7 age range in families with a computer in 2000, from 20% today. Havas Interactive leads the CD-ROM software market in France with a 12% share by value. The leader in the educational sector with a 21.7% share, it also leads the game sector with 9.5% while ranking fourth in practical life with 4.6% of this sector. The company puts the emphasis on product innovation and trade marketing operations with the distribution sector to confirm its leadership in the future.

BELGIUM: A GIB SUBSIDIARY RESTRUCTURED

Article Abstract:

The 74 GB supermarkets, of the GIB group, are to be restructured. This plan provides for closing four unprofitable Super GB units, four conversions and sixteen 'new solutions.' There will be a total of 85 lay-offs as a result of this plan. GB must cope with a problem of over staffing. It is giving itself two years to solve this problem. The revitalisation plan is to be carried out before GIB enters the stock market in 2003.
