FRANCE: THE LONG AWAITED PS2 CONSOLE BY SONY

Article Abstract:

All players in the game software market in France, including manufacturers and distributors, are counting on the introduction of Sony's PS2 game console in October 2000, to relaunch the market. Sony too is putting high hopes on the future console, in spite of its expensive price of FFr 2,800-3,000 and limited game range available (four to begin, around 30 in the Christmas period). According to a survey, four out of ten PlayStation users plan to shift to the PS2, while the Japanese electronics giant plans to supply 200,000 PS2 units on D Day. Sony will install an Internet booking system for the future console. Consumers too are waiting for the PS2 machine, as sales of game consoles in France turned over FFr 154mn during the first quarter of 2000, down 17% from the same year-earlier period. Sales by volume dropped 26%.

FRANCE: DREAMCAST LAUNCHED 23 SEPTEMBER 99

Article Abstract:

The aggressively priced Sega Dreamcast games console (retailing at less than FFr 1,800 in France) will offer new competition to the monopoly held by Sony and (to a lesser extent) Nintendo. However these two latter firms are planning to launch their future consoles in 2000. In France, the Dreamcast will benefit from a launch-related advertising campaign worth FFr 100mn. It will not be positioned as a competitor to the Playstation or the N64, but as the new games console that will offer new sensations to players.
