Facilities management

Article Abstract:

Facilities management (FM) companies are increasingly emerging to meet the demand for outsourcing. FM can provide a basic package of services such as cleaning, catering or portering, or it can offer services related to a customer's business such as travel, IT, and car fleet management. Advantages of FM include the variable costs that can be renegotiated, although some companies consider FM is an additional expense and a further unnecessary layer of management. There are also fears about loss of control. An FM contract has been running for about a year at BP Exploration's headquarters, where FM suppliers and BP management work alongside each other in a seamless operation.

The generation game

Article Abstract:

Many of the UK's former state utilities are combining to create large, multi-service energy groups, supplying electricity, gas and water. The opening up of the gas and electricity markets to competition should benefit both business and domestic users, with competition improving efficiency and driving down prices. Liberalisation has been the incentive for suppliers to develop and diversify, with many offering services including energy and water management, and environmental consultancy.

Distribution

Article Abstract:

Large logistics suppliers can now offer a very wide range of highly sophisticated services. Logistics is being increasingly regarded as a management discipline which can be applied in-house, and is an operation which is completely separate from the large outsourcing deals. These trends are putting growing pressure on small logistics companies, many of which cannot afford to invest in latest IT solutions.
