Farmers and sons: at potato empire, an heir peels away year of tradition

Article Abstract:

J.R. Simplot, the 95-year-old founder of frozen food and fertilizer company J.R. Simplot Co., is clashing with his son Scott Simplot over management decisions. Though the elder Simplot no longer owns voting stock in the company nor holds a managerial position, he is objecting vociferously to his son's efforts to modernize operations. Some of Scott Simplot's initiatives include closing inefficient plants, standardizing accounting practices, and reversing the company's decades-long practices of selling products by the ton and maintaining large cattle feedlots.

Webvan files plans for IPO despite losses

Article Abstract:

Webvan Group Inc. filed a proposal for an initial public offering (IPO). The company is planning to sell up to $345 million (321.3 million euros) in shares in the IPO. Webvan is taking a risk with the IPO as the company hopes that its grocery online plans will not be endangered by Internet stock shakeouts. Webvan's operations only encompass the San Francisco Bay Area.
