Fiat helps boost Italian car sales

Fiat SpA posted an 18% rise in Italian car sales for the month of January 2000. The car maker sold 267,200 vehicles for the month. Fiat's 1999 sales increased 42% to 104,497.

Fiat and GM launch alliance but fail to tackle overcapacity; deal includes share swap, joint ventures in European and South American operations

Fiat and General Motos established an alliance to help each company expand their markets in Europe and Latin America. General Motors will obtain 20% of Fiat Auto and Fiat will obtain 5.1% of General Motors' common stock to establish the partnership.
