Friends, ex-friends and rebels

Article Abstract:

Congo has been hit by civil war, with Angola and Zimbawe backing government forces and helping the government to make advances. Angola is concerned that UNITA could use Congo as a base from which to attack the Angolan government. There were initial economic benefits when Laurent Kabila's government took over, such as a drop in inflation and corruption, but foreign investors have been deterred by their treatment, and barter is common. The government has used Congo nationalism which includes incitement of attacks on Tutsis, and this nationalism could lead to more deaths.

Old friends, new war

Article Abstract:

Rwanda and Uganda have been allies, and both have supported Congolese rebels, but they back different factions and this has led to conflict between the armed forces of the two countries in Congo. Uganda focused on north-east Congo, which was an easier task than Rwanda's attempt at the capital of Congo. Uganda has set up an alliance with a Congolese businessman, Jean-Pierre Bemba, which is opposed by Rwanda. The dispute between the two countries could be used by Congolese president, Laurent Kabila, but he has not taken advantage of this opportunity.

Talking, but not listening

Article Abstract:

Efforts to achieve peace in Congo do not appear likely to succeed. Talks in Zambia have been prolonged, but a hoped-for agreement by Jun 26 1999 has not materialized. The governments involved in the conflict wish for peace since resources are being drained by war, and ministers are on friendly terms with each other. Anti-Kabila forces control some half of Congo, though different factions among the rebels are supported by the allies, Uganda and Rwanda. Rwanda is concerned about genocidal militia forces which could attack rwanda from Congo.
