From brutal to modern: George Gilbert Associates has transformed a grim 1960s university building into a light and elegant Modernist hotel

Article Abstract:

The new Apex Hotel in Edinburgh was converted from a former 1960s university building. The grid of columns, plan depth and floor height were retained and the hotel room sizes were dictated by these parameters. The building now incorporates hotel rooms, conference facilities and rooftop restaurants and groundfloor shops. The original lifts and stairs were re-used and modernised and the facade features horizontal and vertaical lines, square-cut bays and steel members against smooth render.

Thinking of a five-star future

Article Abstract:

The interesting prospect raised in the European hotel design and management held at Royal Lancaster, London, was to incorporate more retail elements in the hotel lobbies, rather than the little boxes that one usually finds. The concluding session of this conference concerned the extent to which green policies should benefit hotel development and renovation projects.
