U.K. bears brunt of auto cutbacks

The article discusses the auto cutbacks in the U.K. A strong pound and a global glut in capacity are making auto makers cut back or close operations in their European plants, and the U.K. is becoming a popular place for auto makers to cut back or stop production. The General Motors Corp. announcement that it will stop producing the Vauxhall Vectra at its Luton, U.K. facility finishes off a bad year for the U.K. car industry.

GM, Ford plan cuts in production

Article Abstract:

Following weak automobile sales for the month of August, both Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Corp. will be cutting production in the fourth quarter. The cuts are expected to affect all aspects of the automotive industry, leading to possible layoffs at companies that supply parts to the auto industry giants, and putting an added strain on the economy of m idwestern s tates such as Michigan and Ohio.
