Germany's eastward urge

Article Abstract:

Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic are largely dependent on Germany for trade, investment and political support. Hard financial times caused by the integration of East Germany cause some popular resistance to sponsoring new allies. The trio's plans to join Nato and the European Union are discussed.

Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia are making progress towards joining the European Union, and also have ambitions to join NATO. However, many economic and political problems still remain, as well as a feeling of isolation.
