HBO sticks to program; U.S. pay-TV network spends more on original shows to add subscribers

Article Abstract:

Time Warner's HBO is spending more money on a television production than the movie, "Saving Private Ryan," cost. The 10-part miniseries "Band of Brothers" being filmed outside London, has a pricetag of $120 million. One reason might be the two complete 1940s Belgian towns that were built for the film. Tom Hanks is director and co-producer. HBO has tough competition from Viacom and UPN. HBO's success with "Sex and the City" and "The Sopranos" may have inspired the competition.
