HSBC fans keep the faith

Article Abstract:

Shareholders of Hong Kong's largest bank, HSBC Holdings PLC, are holding on to their shares as they expect share prices to rise even farther. The confidence on HSBC's shares is attributed to the bank's plan to list in the US in Jul 1999 and Hong Kong's recovering economy. The price of HSBC's shares soared to a record high of $38.75 in May 11, 1999. Although some analysts agree that HSBC's shares could rise a little higher, they recommend investing in smaller Hong Kong banks for long-term benefits.

MTRC bond helps economy; response shows resilient confidence in the city

Article Abstract:

Mass Transit Railway Corp's successful bond sale is indicative of the resurgence in international confidence in Hong Kong's economy. This, despite the devaluation of Brazil's currency and a series of defaults at the Chinese government-backed trust companies. The bond sale is the biggest sale made by a Hong Kong borrower since the collapse of the Asian markets in 1997. The new bonds were priced at 99.584 which was 287.5 percentage points more than US Treasury's issue.
