Hong Kong bans giveaway

Article Abstract:

Tobacco companies in Hong Kong are seeing an end to their promotional strategies of giving away prizes to reward cigarette-smoking as a new public health legislation takes effect on Jul. 1, 1998. One of the tobacco makers' promotional gimmicks is involved in exchanging empty cigarette packs for gifts, which increase along with the number of traded packs. With the rule, such promotions, that for a long time have angered antismoking activists, will be banned. The new legislation will also prohibit smoking in public establishments and on Dec. 31, 1998, tobacco ads will also have to go.

Cosmetics sales are strong

Article Abstract:

Intense sales for cosmetics and toiletries in Hong Kong are strong in spite of the economic crisis experienced by the Asian region. While some retail chains are shutting down their operations, cosmetics chains are experiencing tremendous growth and expansion. Companies such as H2O Plus projected positive growth rates with the the sale of its aqua-tinted gels, the facial gels promising to provide users' skins with the hydrating effects equivalent to the daily practice of drinking eight glasses of water.

Tough times for restaurants: recession puts change on the menu for eateries

Article Abstract:

The recession in Hong Kong has forced big restaurants to close shop. According to the Assn of Restaurant Managers, another 500 restaurants are expected to close down after the Chinese New Year in 1999. To stay afloat, big restaurants have diversified into smaller-scale and specialty models. One proof of this is the revival of cha chan teng, Hong Kong's version of small cafes. Others still innovate by providing specialty products such as German sausages.
