Hang-up for cellular firms

Article Abstract:

India's deregulation of telecommunication services in an attempt to counteract India's existing poor phone service, which was just 22 lines per every 1,000 people in 1998, has many cellular companies feeling threatened. New government regulation that states that fixed-line companies are now able to operate wireless-in-local-loop (WILL) networks, and anyone who meets basic requirements and is able to pay a set fee is allowed to start a fixed-line phone company, is being disputed by Cellular Operators Association of India before the Telecom Disputes Settlement Appellate Tribunal.
