Holding the line: Asia's telecoms deregulation makes patchy progress

Article Abstract:

Telecommunications could become a major source of economic growth in Asia. However, realizing this potential requires the continuation of deregulation. Ending excessive government control would make the telecommunications industry more competitive and thus more efficient. Deregulation has progressed well in some countries such as Japan but not in others such as China and India where telephone service remains poor as a result. Several factors have slowed deregulation such as governments' preference for establishing new services rather than liberalizing old services.

Dividing line up in the air

Article Abstract:

China is an attractive prospect for Korean Air and Asiana Airlines. However, the two airlines are hampered by the lack of an air-services agreement between China and South Korea. The only way the airlines could carry passengers is through charter flights. Another problem is the Chinese demand for an adjustment in South Korea's flight-information region. The reasons for the Chinese demand are not clear. Nevertheless, South Korean officials are irritated that the Chinese would delay the opening of air services between the two countries.
