Hong Kong fast-food fight; Fairwood's new weapon: the rice burger

Article Abstract:

Fairwood Holdings Ltd. has launched an aggressive strategy to revamp its image, improve services and upgrade the quality of its food. As a part of its plan, Fairwood has introduce the rice burger. The burger uses rice shaped into round patties, instead of buns, to surround a variety of meats vegetables. The company has also adopted cost-cutting measures to improve its bottomline. Fairwood posted losses of HK$88.2 mil in the year ending Mar 31, 1966 and is expected to reduce its losses to HK$13.9 mil for FY97.

The Colonel goes to Vietnam, but gets there late

Article Abstract:

PepsiCo Restaurants International has ventured into the fast-food retail market in Vietnam by forging a franchise deal with local private conglomerate Thien Nam Corp. The franchise focuses on the establisment of a Kentucky Fried Chicken branch in the Superbowl shopping mall in Ho Chi Minh City in late 1997. The Philippines-based Jollibee Foods Corp, Texas Chicken of AFC Enterprises and Allied Domecq Ltd's Baskin Robbins ice cream business have ventured into the Vietnamese market earlier.

Slump in Fairwood stock isn't over yet, analysts say

Article Abstract:

Shares of Fairwood Holdings Ltd. dropped 22% in early Sep. 1996 after the fast-food retail chain priced a rights issue at a big discount. Analysts predict that the stock could further plummet to 35 Hong Kong cents. Fairwood is expected to raise HK$83 million from the rights issue of 237.2 million shares. The company intends to use HK$60 million of the money to settle its debt and the remainder to open six new fast-food outlets in China.
